Fort Union Jail

Fort Union was near the end of the Santa Fe Trail, and capturing it was the objective of CS Gen. HH Sibley in an attempt to gain control of the Southwest for the Confederacy. The attack failed due to many factors, one of which was the arrival of Union troops from Colorado. The Coloradans drove off the horses and cattle and the attack ground to a halt. I suspect Gen Sibley’s walk home was less than pleasant.
